The beginning of the department of English is concomitant with the beginning of the college in 1960. The department came into being with Dr. R. Awasthi, proud student of Dr. C. Radhakrishan at BHU as its founding head duly assisted by the fellow departmental associates late Dr. Baljeet Singh, Dr. Raghvanand Rahav and Dr. A.K. Mathur. Consequent upon the retirement of Prof. R.L. Awasthi in 1978, preceded by the resignation of Prof. A.K. Mathur who later joined N.A.S. College, Meerut; the department was run very efficiently by Dr. Baljeet Singh from 1978 to 1995 till his superannuation, thereby paving the way for the next seniormost Dr. Raghvanand to take over in 1995 but he too could not take harness in 1997. Dr. RajHans Gupta took over as the head of the department and continued till his retirement on 30.06.2018 which was followed by Ms. Sunita Sharma who also discharged the duties of H.O.D. efficiently. At present, the department is working in the leadership of Dr. Sunil Kr. Agarwal.
The department of English has been graced by the men of letters whose proven ability to deliver goods both as dedicated faculty and researcher and research guide has been acknowledged in and outside the college. The department very proudly takes the credit of maintaining academic excellence and standard by resolutely adhering to the cherished ideals of dedication, discipline and commitment to the lofty time trust and time honoured traditions of teachers-taught relationship. All the faculty members of the department have immensely contributed in the promotion of teaching learning activities besides getting actively involved in the promotion of research related activates. Right from Dr. R. L. Awasthi, the former founder head of the department to Dr. RajHans Gupta and Dr. S.K. Agarwal, about 30 scholars have been conferred upon the coveted Ph.D. degrees. It goes to the credit of the department that students are rendering invaluable services in different spheres of life as teacheers and administrators & thus adding to its reputation by bringing laurels to the department and the college. The present day department headed by Dr. Sunil Kr. Agarwal is committed to provide continuity to all the good values and traditions innovated from the former mobile stalwarts of the department.
The department always followed the UGC and University sponsored syllabus in respect of UG and PG classes’ students had always a strong feeling of attraction towards English literature and language for multiple reasons. The department always tried to promote English communication skills among the students by organizing debates, speech contests, quiz programme and essay contests in order to bring out the hidden talent of budding taughts.
